SECTION I: ROLLS ISSUED BY THE RUDOLPH WURLITZER COMPANY

TEST ROLL

This short roll with no number is used to test the operation of the organ and to tune it. It is spooled on its own spool, resembling a standard player piano roll spool in diameter and appearance, unlike Style 165 music rolls, which have hollow cardboard cores of 2-inch diameter and are intended to be chucked onto the metal spool of the organ for playing.

                                                                              (Recut by Play-Rite)

ROLL NUMBER 6500

This roll is not a Wurlitzer roll. The number 6500 is based on a typewritten label found on Ross Davis' copy, and is believed to have been assigned by Ross for convenience. Wurlitzer customarily began a roll number series with roll -01 rather than roll -00. Moreover, tunes 2, 5, and 9 appear on Wurlitzer rolls in different arrangements. While Wurlitzer very often re-used a tune from one roll on another roll, tunes were rarely re-arranged, the known exceptions being "Our Sammies," "Peggy O'Neil," "The Rainbow March" and "Three O'Clock In The Morning."

It is probable that this roll is one of those issued by C.W. Parker, the Leavenworth carousel manufacturer, who is known to have issued at least three Style 165 rolls in the 1920s, as discussed in the note to the "Bacigalupi Special" roll in the non-Wurlitzer section of this catalog. This roll was probably arranged by Luigi Bacigalupo, who worked for Parker circa 1915-1919. It shares the characteristic with the "Bacigalupi Special" roll of not containing the register control perforations for registers used only in Wurlitzer organs larger than the 165.

(Recut by Play-Rite)
* Late recuts have the B.A.B. arrangement of the fox trot "Amapola" (Joseph M. Lacalle) (Dec 15, 1924) substituted as tune 1. Although "Los Matrimonios, Salvavidas" has not survived on any known roll, Chris Carlisle, proprietor of the musical website www.bandorganmusic.com, has a recording, made by his grandfather Paul Eakins, of the missing tune as played on a Wurlitzer Style 157 band organ. Click here to hear that recording.

NOTE: Most, perhaps all, of the tunes on this roll have note-for-note interpolations from other Wurlitzer 165 tunes in them, such as phrases from "Beautiful Ohio" in tune 3, "Ja-Da, Ja-Da, Ja-Da" in tune 7, "On Miami Shore" in tune 8, "Chong, He Come From Hong Kong" in tune 10. The other tunes where interpolations have not been recognized may still contain them, taken from other, lost Wurlitzer rolls. For example tune 6 contains passages that sound exactly like phrases from "Ecos de Lisboa" (by Goris & Aceves?).

* Pseudonym of Harry J. Lincoln.
** This is the title under which the march was copyrighted and published in 1889; it is also the title given in New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. Roll and record labels customarily title it "Le Père de la Victoire (The Father of Victory)." Wurlitzer inexplicably names the composer as Kessler.

(Original roll, missing tune 1, in the D. Johnson collection. Tune 1 newly arranged by Rich Olsen)

(Recut by Play-Rite)

(Pre-2012 recuts indicating these tunes are actually the preceding roll number 6532)

* Misidentified on early labels as the 1912 waltz "Destiny" by Sydney Baynes.
** Pseudonym of Harry J. Lincoln.

The eight Wurlitzer arrangements on this 10-tune roll came from a very early Play-Rite recutting made for Ross R. Davis. The Davis version lacked roll numbering and tune titles. Tune 5 lacked its ending, and about half of tune 6 was missing, with a noticeable break between them. That, together with misidentification of tune 4 as "Destiny," by Sydney Baynes, and the inability to identify "Old Reliable," led to the assumption that this roll was parts of roll 6532 and of two other rolls. The roll number 6504(?) was arbitrarily assigned to it in the recutting process.

This 10-tune variant of roll 6532 is a copy of the Davis recut in the collection of Don Rand, Thomaston, Me., with the following modifications: tune 2 was arranged by Max W. Hurley and tune 3 by Tom Meijer, to supplement the original eight tunes; tune 5, only the first half of which is present in the Davis recuts, was lost in the process of making this new 10-tune recut, and so was newly arranged, using sheet music and tape recordings of the Davis version, by David E. Stumpf; and tune 6, which was missing its opening section in the Davis version, has been supplied with an introduction.
