(Composited by Play-Rite with roll 13265 and issued as roll 13265-13270)
NOTE: This roll is known with a typed Herschell label, but the roll contents bear some evidence of Ralph Tussing's work: it ends with an obscure ancient march, probably taken, like many on T.R.T. rolls, from Mr. Tussing's old band music books. (The same may be true of roll 13269). Additionally the label misspells the Allan Herschell name, a mistake more apt to be made by Tussing than by a veteran Herschell employee.

* Mislabeled by T.R.T. (and subsequently by Play-Rite in compositing the roll) as "Crazy Man, Crazy," by Bill Haley (June 10, 1953). The error was first noticed by Andrew Lardieri in September 2016, while working on the Casino Pier carousel. The error has been traced back to original T.R.T. documents in the Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum that show T.R.T. labels and roll lists, typed by Ralph Tussing, giving the incorrect title, although Ralph's stencil (master) for the tune states the correct title. In 1954 Ralph was also arranging the two tunes for use on Style 165 rolls. He must have become "crazed" by the two tunes, although he never did arrange "Crazy Man, Crazy" for the Style 150 scale.

(Original roll in the Knoebels Amusement Park collection)

Here endeth rolls from North Tonawanda. Ralph Tussing died June 29, 1974.

One can almost see the aging of Ralph Tussing and his difficulty in finding current hits to arrange, as one chronologically studies his output. His last seven Style 150 rolls were of atypical character and were apparently issued at longer intervals than usual.

The era of published sheet music had ended with World War II. Thereafter, most music was going directly from composer to film soundtrack or phonograph record, without ever being published in sheet music form. Compositions that were, in the Tin Pan Alley days, deposited for copyright in the form of full printed copies of the sheet music were now being deposited simply as hand-written "lead sheets" -- brief staff notation of the basic melody, just enough to identify the tune and secure copyright protection for it. Isolated in North Tonawanda, N.Y., Ralph Tussing must have found it impossible to obtain the music he needed for his arranging.

None of the 12 tune titles on his last two rolls could be found listed in the Copyright Office. Roll labels show only tune titles, no composers -- and strange titles they are! On January 29, 2004, an internet search turned up the Thomas J. Valentino, Inc., website -- and there all 12 tune titles were found. The Valentino organization owns the rights to thousands of tunes and sound effects used in the film, radio, and television industry. From this, one can theorize that the tunes on rolls 13313 and 13314 might have been familiar in the 1960s as themes from radio or television shows. Some of those themes must have once been published in book form, a copy of which came into Ralph Tussing's hands, and he used it to wrap up his Style 150 roll production.
